The MOSFET is a type of transistor used for amplifying or switching electronic signals. It is one of the most common transistors used in digital and analog circuits. A transistor is one of the most basic building blocks of electronics. Two of the prongs on the MOSFET act as the connections between the source of the electric current and the drain of it. The other prong is used as the switch that controls the other two.
These enhancement-mode (normally-off) transistors utilize a lateral MOS structure and Microchip’s well-proven silicon gate manufacturing process. This combination produces devices with the power handling capabilities of bipolar transistors, with the high input impedance, and negative temperature coefficient inherent in MOS devices. A P-channel MOSFET is only on when the voltage is zero or negative.
